In part one of this series, I made a case for “Whatever God says is truth.” Without a doubt there is some disagreement with my conclusion. However, I find it difficult if not impossible to argue or disagree with Jesus! In John’s Gospel, John records Jesus making this statement while praying to His Father: Your word is truth (John 17:17).
Can we trust what Jesus says about God and His Word? As for me, I tend to trust someone who has “been there and done that” when it comes to telling me the truth! Remember my brother-in-law and the roof?
John makes an opening statement in his account of Jesus’ life on earth which really sells it for me. John writes, In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God (John 1:1a). Later in verse 18 we find that He (Jesus) has explained Him (God). One more testimony that puts an end to the debate for me is recorded in Hebrews 1:2 which says, In these last days He (God) has spoken to us in His Son. If you still doubt that everything God says is truth, and you sincerely want to investigate, I encourage you to take the time to search the Scriptures for yourself! In fact, God encourages us to do so saying, you will find me…when you search for me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:14). It will take some time and effort, but what you discover may affect not only your here and now, but more important your eternity!
If you want to walk with me now on a brief journey as you read, I’m going to start in Genesis, the book of beginnings:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). For those who believe the Bible, God leaves no doubt or mystery about how He put this universe, and this planet, together. With that said, listen and contemplate how anyone could not conclude that it is DIVINELY DESIGNED!!! As we will see next week, the earth operates with precision down to the speed it turns, the tilt of its axis, the rotation around the sun, and its place in our solar system.
Our universe is a frequent topic of discussion by so-called scientific “experts” who believe creation and the Creation story is a myth. They start with their own theories based on their own prejudices. I don’t really know how many “theories” are out there, but one in particular refers to an explosion of gases. Here again, I am not being specific about their definitions that try to explain our universe. But in short, all of a sudden when the “big bang” takes place, a solar system is up and running with a sun that shines, a moon that rises, and an earth that is spinning and capable to support life! Well how do you do? Or as some would say today, “shut the front door!”
How can anything work without a designer behind the anything? Something as simple as a ball point pen cannot and will not operate unless it has been designed and put together. Only then can you and I write a letter or mark on paper.
As we read further in the Genesis narrative, let’s be honest – God did not have much to work with. And look what He accomplished. He just spoke, Let there be, and it was! And what a powerful command that was!!
My source of truth does not look at the formless and void, the darkness that surrounds it, and throw up His hands in frustration. He intervenes. His Spirit was moving over the surface of the deep (Genesis 1:2). Later, the scripture says, God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good (Genesis 1:31).
Who or what is your source of truth? Is it the One by which everything He says is truth? Or, do you rely on information from some so-called expert or experts that work on theory instead of reality? I choose to believe the One who testifies of Himself. His testimony has and is proving to be true through every century and unto countless billions of people.
Next week, part three of “What is Truth? – You cannot make this stuff up!”
